By sharing Maya's story with your friends, family, and people you work with may help her find a live donor that she so desperately needs. We are ready to share what the donor process entails and how donors can receive help along the way.
Why Maya needs a kidney
In June 2022 Maya visited an Emergent Care after being very ill for a few days and then was rushed to the emergency department of a nearby hospital. After being admitted for few days Maya was diagnosed with stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and we learned that her kidneys were only functioning at 20%. Kidney disease is often called the "silent killer," because no symptoms are apparent until the advanced stage of the disease. In fact, one in nine Americans has CKD and are unaware that they have it, because they do not feel ill.
Since then Maya is under the care of a Nephrologist locally and with the Boston Children's Hospital Kidney Transplant Team. If Maya receives a kidney from a living donor that kidney can last nearly twice as long as a kidney transplanted from a deceased donor. A kidney from a living donor offers significant advantages. Recipients often recover faster, because a living-donor kidney usually begins functioning soon after transplant. If a living donor can't be found, dialysis may be required until a donor kidney becomes available. We want to avoid dialysis and hope to find a donor with your help today.
